LIFE Club

Our mentoring program, “LIFE Club”, aims to provide a safe, structured and supportive environment for boys in Grades 4-6 at the primary/elementary school level in the island of Jamaica. We partner with their teachers and parents/guardians to develop discipline, confidence and positive influence as we support them in their personal growth, academic improvement and character-building. Through academics, arts and athletics, we seek to inspire and empower our boys to fulfil their potential. Attendance, attire, attitude and aptitude are among the ways our boys compete to earn points for their squads (see scoreboard at marqjohnson.com/mentoring#scoreboard).

Our standard itinerary includes academic support classes Mondays to Wednesdays, club meeting on Fridays whilst parent meetings, field trips and socials are scheduled in each term/semester. Each squad comprises eight (8) members, each assigned a rank, role and responsibility, and is assigned a senior student as Squad Advisor. A typical meeting features icebreaker, housekeeping matters, main activity (e.g. video presentation and Q&A, general quiz, indoor games, etc.) and light refreshment.

We are currently in the second year of the pilot that was launched in October 2023 with 30 Grades 4-6 boys, ages 9 to 12 years old. In these early stages of the program, we will focus on the upper school age group at the primary/elementary level i.e. Grades 4-6 and, as we grow and more resources become available, we will steadily add the lower school age group, Grades 1-3, as well as start the program in other schools. The plan is to mentor these 30 boys for 3 years i.e. Grades 4 through to Grade 6, to help them prepare academically and socially for high school.
