Movements Dance Company of Jamaica
Celebrating 40
Movements Dance Company of Jamaica will stage its 40th Anniversary Season at the Little Theatre November 26 and 27 under the theme, “REACHING TO THE FUTURE”.
Movements Dance Company of Jamaica began observing its 40th Anniversary in December 2021, continuing to December 2022. The celebration was launched with a video recording which along with this year’s live show will reflect the positive spirit and style for which Movements has come to be known. Movements embraces modern contemporary dance from a Jamaica perspective, heavily influenced by the rhythms of the Caribbean, the classics of Europe, Jazz and the reggae/dancehall energy of Jamaica. The repertoire features the inputs of many talented local and international artistes whose work have greatly enriched the impact of the Company over the past 4 decades.
Movements is a non-profit organization administered by a Management Committee comprised of volunteers from various sectors. The Company has a rich repertoire consisting of varied works by talented local and international artists whose input maintains the eclectic mission of the Founders of the Company, Artistic Director, Monica Campbell McFarlane, Patricia Grant Heron, Michelle Tappin-Lee and Denise Desnoes.
For Those we’ve lost
Following the death of so many who have fallen victim to the COVID pandemic, a decision was taken last year to dedicate the 40th Anniversary Season to the many persons who have been lost in Jamaica and elsewhere in this pandemic that has overtaken the world.
Over the years Movements has raised funding though sponsorship from various corporate sponsors, friends and family who have supported the ideals of the Company to enhance modern contemporary dance theatre in Jamaica and to support worthy causes in the process.
A major effort during the pandemic was the international collaboration, Africa Arise project in 2021 which featured artistes, performers and personalities from all over the world to assist needy African communities to tackle the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic.
40th Anniversary Season
The 40th Anniversary show at LTM, will open with a Gala night followed by a Matinee performance which will help to support a number of charities. Commenting on the period of the pandemic on the work of the Company, Artistic Director Monica Campbell McFarlane has observed that “The impact of the pandemic severely affected the original plans for the observance of this important anniversary but we are confident that our activities will do justice to the efforts and contributions of all who have contributed to the journey of the past four decades that has gone into making Movements Dance Company of Jamaica a force to be reckoned with within the Caribbean and the world”.
